Calgary Neighborhood Overview: Deer Run & Deer Ridge

Deer Run and Deer Ridge are two residential neighbourhoods located in the southeast quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. Although they share some similarities, such as being established in the late 1970s and being represented by the Ward 14 councillor in the Calgary City Council, they have their unique characteristics that set them apart from each other.

Deer Run is located in a bend of the Bow River and is surrounded to the east and south by the Fish Creek Provincial Park. It is bounded to the north by North Deersaxon Circle and the community of Deer Ridge and to the west by Bow Bottom Trail. In contrast, Deer Ridge is situated in the Bow River valley and is bounded to the north by Canyon Meadows Drive, to the east by Deercliff Road and the Bow River, to the south by Deerfield Circle and the community of Deer Run, and to the west by Bow Bottom Trail. Fish Creek Provincial Park is located immediately east of Deer Ridge.

In terms of demographics, Deer Run had a population of 5,341 living in 2,113 dwellings according to the City of Calgary's 2012 municipal census, while Deer Ridge had a population of 4,084 living in 1,501 dwellings, both experiencing a slight increase from the previous year. The population density of Deer Run was 2,810/km2 (7,280/sq mi) in 2012, and Deer Ridge had a population density of 2,920/km2 (7,560/sq mi) in the same year. The median household income of Deer Run in 2000 was $76,038, with 6.1% low-income residents living in the neighbourhood. In contrast, the median household income of Deer Ridge in 2000 was $59,149, with 17.1% low-income residents living in the neighbourhood. As of 2000, 16.9% of the residents in Deer Run were immigrants, and 15.2% of the residents in Deer Ridge were immigrants. Furthermore, a proportion of 6.3% of the buildings in Deer Run were condominiums or apartments, and 14% of the housing was used for renting. In comparison, a proportion of 10.5% of the buildings in Deer Ridge were condominiums or apartments, and 36% of the housing was used for renting.

The communities have different schools serving them as well. Deer Run is served by Deer Run Elementary public school, with designated out of district junior high school and high school provided by Wilma Hansen Junior High and Lord Beaverbrook High School. On the other hand, Deer Ridge is served by Don Bosco Elementary & Junior High school adjacent from Wilma Hansen Junior High School.

Overall, Deer Run and Deer Ridge are two unique communities with their own features, demographics, and schools that contribute to their respective personalities.
